Tom Brady on regional cover of Sports Illustrated

With the 2008 NFL season kicking off next week, Sports Illustrated has its NFL preview currently hitting newstands.

SI has six regional covers, with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady on one of them. LaDainian Tomlinson (Chargers), Tony Romo (Cowboys), Donovan McNabb (Eagles), Maurice Jones-Drew (Jaguars) and Adrian Peterson (Vikings) are on the other regional covers.

Peter King and Paul "Dr. Z" Zimmerman both pick the Patriots to win the Super Bowl -- King picks New England over Dallas, while Zimmerman takes New England over Philadelphia.

King also ranks the top 50 players in the NFL, with Brady (1), Randy Moss (4) and Wes Welker (40) all in the mix.

Here is a snapshot of the regional cover:

Special delivery

Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff was hard at work this morning, with Atlanta preparing for its preseason finale at Baltimore tomorrow night, when he was quickly stopped in his tracks after opening an important package that had been delivered to his office.

In the package, which certainly had to be insured, was the 16-0 perfect season/AFC championship ring presented to players and coaches earlier this month.

Dimitroff, the Patriots' former director of college scouting, paused for a moment after seeing the ring.

"A class move from a class organization," he said.

Gasper: What to watch vs. Giants

The Boston Globe's Chris Gasper provides three things to watch when the Patriots visit the New York Giants in their final exhibition game Thursday night.

Included in his areas to focus on: the overall health of the Patriots (who do they protect and who will they play?), the first-stringers (do they play at all?), and the backup quarterback situation (who will they get one final look at?).

Larry Izzo honored at Gala; Tom Brady tends to personal business

Larry Izzo sings "Born in the USA" during "Larryoke" in June. (David Kamerman / Globe Staff)

The Patriots held their annual Kickoff Gala on Tuesday night at Gillette Stadium and special teams captain Larry Izzo was recognized as the Ron Burton Community Service Award winner.

Izzo, 33, has focused much of his charitable outreach on supporting the United States military. He has held three karaoke events, called "Larryoke", to raise money for military charities such as Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy Fund, Home for Our Troops, the Fallen Patriot Fund, Fisher House Boston, Operation Ensuring Christmas and the Pat Tillman Foundation. His three Larryoke events, featuring Larry and his teammates belting out karaoke tunes, have raised a total of $600,000.

Izzo is the sixth Patriots player to be selected as the Ron Burton Award winner, joining past honorees Joe Andruzzi (2003), Troy Brown (2004), Matt Light (2005), Jarvis Green (2006) and Ty Warren (2007).

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was not present at the Gala because he was on the West Coast. Brady taped a message that was played to the crowd, and said that he had to tend to a personal matter.

Gasper: Cuts part of the biz

On the day the Patriots trimmed their active roster by five players, the Globe's Chris Gasper describes how cuts are a necessary evil in the NFL. He notes that a larger round of dismissals looms Saturday when teams must drop from 75 to 53 active players.

Roster moves analysis

ANALYSIS

With the Patriots placing starting right guard Stephen Neal on the reserve/physically unable to perform list because of his shoulder, this means the team will be without Neal for at least the first six weeks of the season.

So the question then becomes: Who fills the void?

Fifth-year player Billy Yates has seen the most first-team repetitions at that spot, while eighth-year man Russ Hochstein is another option. Hochstein has been sidelined after appearing to suffer a foot injury in the exhibition opener, so if he's not ready for action, the Patriots also could call on third-year player Dan Connolly or more experienced options like Mike Flynn (11th year) or John Welbourn (10th year).

As for the team's other moves, O'Callaghan projected as the team's top backup at right tackle, behind Nick Kaczur. Wesley Britt likely will now assume that spot. Veteran Oliver Ross, who remains on the active/physically unable to perform list, is another possibility.

The release of veteran cornerback Jason Webster is a bit of a surprise -- he was one of the team's early free agent signings -- but it likely clears the way for rookie Jonathan Wilhite (fourth round) to earn a roster spot and potentially contribute in sub packages.

Running back Kyle Eckel faced longer odds based on the crowd in front of him -- a group that includes Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, LaMont Jordan, and Heath Evans.

Offensive lineman Ryan Wendell was a long shot to make the club.

Faulk, Morris talk preseason

The Patriots' locker room wasn't particularly lively this afternoon, but running backs Kevin Faulk and Sammy Morris talked to reporters a bit.

Faulk stressed the importance of getting better regardless of the opponent in Thursday's final exhibition contest (the New York Giants, who defeated New England in Super Bowl XLII). Morris gave an update on his health and stressed how the team needed to use the game to gain consistency as the regular season nears.

Jimmy Johnson on Patriots

Fox analyst Jimmy Johnson, the former Cowboys head coach, shares his thoughts on the Patriots and the AFC East. The comments were forwarded from a Fox publicist:

Johnson on the New England Patriots
"The New England Patriots, because of what runs this league -- quarterbacks, defense and coaching -- will still be at the top. With Tom Brady and what they have offensively, with their defense and with Bill Belichick and his coaching staff, they’ll still be one of the top teams in the NFL. They are getting older but they’ve brought in some good young players. I think they’ve nailed a linebacker and a couple of outside cornerbacks that’ll be an addition to the defense. I think, the other thing, Dom Capers is going to the Patriots. I know Belichick felt he was spread a little bit thin last year actually doing individual coaching more than being a head coach and I think that with Capers coming in there as a defensive coach, I think it will help him oversee a little better than what he did even a year ago. I think the other thing, without the distractions of all of the off-the-field situations they had with the league, with rules, etc, etc, I think that will allow them to focus. Now having said that, how can they duplicate what they did a year ago? They were the best team in football up until that last ball game. I do believe it will be incentive for them to go out there and prove that they’re still one of the best teams in football but I don’t know that they’re going to be able to duplicate the record that they had a year ago."

Johnson on the AFC East
"This is an interesting division. It’s probably the weakest division in football with one of the best teams in football. It’s interesting in that you’ve got some additions to the two bottom teams with a coaching change and with Bill Parcells going to Miami and with Brett Favre going to the Jets, that they should both make an improvement. The Patriots, again will be the best team in the division and one of the best teams in the NFL."

Tom Brady follow-up

Following up on quarterback Tom Brady, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported last night that Brady's injury is a deep bone bruise on his right foot. Mortensen's report came on the "Monday Night Countdown" program.

When media members filed into the Patriots' locker room today, a pair of crutches was seen in Brady's locker, one day after a walking boot was spotted there.

Don't jump to conclusions, however.

Members of the offensive line have been known to play practical jokes with Brady, while Brady himself is often quick with a prank.

Roster to be trimmed to 75

NFL teams must trim their rosters from 80 to a maximum of 75 by 4 p.m. today.

Speaking during his regularly scheduled Monday appearance on WEEI, Patriots coach Bill Belichick hinted that a few of the roster moves might be injury-related, which could mean that some players land on season-ending injured reserve.

Here are a few of the players who have not practiced of late who potentially might fall into that category:
