Valentin Abe founded a charity in Haiti to bring a new industry there - aquaculture. Haiti is an island nation, yes, but one with a seriously depleted fish population. Skip Bennett owns a seafood restaurant in Kenmore Square who was looking for a worthy charity to invest in. Their causes intersected, forming an unusual bond between rich and poor. Fancy dinners in Boston are now helping to support poor fishermen in rural Haiti.

Matthew Stuart’s death this weekend left onetime suspect Willie Bennett as the last surviving figure in the city’s most notorious murder case, the 1989 death of Carol DiMaiti Stuart. But the wounds inflicted on the Bennett family have never gone away. Willie Bennett will barely talk at all about the arrest that has defined his life, and his family still feels unfairly maligned. For both Matthew Stuart and Willie Bennett, the effects of the Stuart Case were permanent.

Joseph Chandonnet served in the Army Air Corps for four years during World War II. But his widow has been battling the federal bureaucracy for survivors’s benefits for three times that long. The Veterans Administration says the dementia that took his life in 1993 was not related to his wartime service. She says they are wrong, and her husband’s medical records do too.

The hardest thing for Yelcie Barlatier has been the unanswered questions. One afternoon earlier this month her 28-year-old son Benjie left their home in Hyde Park and said he was heading into town. “I’ll see you later, Mom,’’ he said.
Polite and soft-spoken, Cedric Cromwell probably doesn’t meet anyone’s stereotype of a high roller. But there’s no doubt he’s a player now.
