Former House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi pled for leniency in federal court yesterday ahead of his sentencing today by Judge Mark Wolf. As he addressed the court, DiMasi said many things - that he was a “broken man;’’ that he was “unable to fully comprehend what has happened;’’ that his “family is devastated;’’ and that he “caused the institution I love to suffer disgrace.’’ - but he never said he was sorry for his crimes.

Ken Feinberg, a Brockton born lawyer, was the special master of the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund, in charge of distributing government-funded settlements to the families of the dead and those who were injured in the attacks, provided they agreed not to sue the airlines whose planes were turned into missiles. He personally met with relatives of over half of the deceased. Feinberg knows of just two survivors who declined the $2 million settlement. The story of one haunts him.
